Opinions, please!

I started registering for some baby stuff last weekend, and we only got through the bedding because it was so overwhelming. I didn't even know what half of the stuff was! I think I'm going to need to take my mom with me next time so she can help me decide what I need and don't need (and explain what some things are)!

I decided the decorate the nursery with Winnie the Pooh because A. I love Winnie the Pooh, B. I used to collect Winnie the Pooh stuff and I already have lots of accessories that would work and that I'd like to bring out of storage, C. It could be used for a boy or girl just in case there was a mistake when they read the ultrasound, and D. Eric's nursery was decorated in Winnie the Pooh when he was a baby (this isn't actually one of the reasons...just more of a coincidence, but it makes him feel more like he was involved in the decorating decisions :)). Here are some pictures of the bedding/decor:

This is where you come in....

I want to go ahead and paint the nursery before I start moving furniture in there (we are buying new bedroom furniture and using some of the old furniture for the nursery). What color do you think I should paint it?? I was originally thinking green, but there is a ton of green in some of the accessories, and a lot of the extra blankets/sheets I registered for are green....so now I'm not sure what color...maybe yellow?? Help, please!

Cold

I had vowed to wait until November to turn on our furnace, mostly because I hate turning the furnace/ac on and off when the weather keeps changing (and because I hate spending money on utilities...money should be spent on pretty, shiny things for myself). It turns out that I'm no match for mother nature and the crazy weather she has unleashed on us this fall. Last week, we had several days where the high was in the 40's...this is completely ridiculous. This week it has been in the 60's, but it still gets down in the 30's at night. What happened to my fall weather??....I think we have fast forwarded to winter, and I don't like it one bit! It makes me extra grumpy because none of my winter clothes fit! Stupid weather...

Baby News

On Monday, I had my 16 week appointment, and I experienced one of the scariest moments of my life. Our doctor was trying to listen to the baby's heartbeat and couldn't find it so she had to do an ultrasound to look for it. She searched around with the stethoscope for a good 5 minutes (the longest 5 minutes of my life!), and I almost got sick when she said she couldn't find it! As soon as she did the ultrasound though, she found the heartbeat and said my bladder was just too full. (TMI ALERT!) I had just gone to the restroom before I went into the examination room to leave my sample, but I had to wait about 20 minutes for the doctor so I guess it just filled back up. They really should tell people to make sure they have empty bladders before they do the exam...it was not a fun experience. Fortunately, everything turned out okay!

On the other end of the emotion spectrum, we found out last night what we were having....

It's a girl!!!!!
Poor Eric is in for some trouble if she turns out as stubborn as me! We are very excited, but I think Eric is still recovering from the news. For some reason, he just knew that we were having a boy. He's still excited about a girl, but he's scared he won't know what to do with a girl. Maybe she'll be a tomboy so he can at least share his love of sports with her :)! I can't wait to share my love of shopping with her...seriously, Eric is in BIG trouble :)!!!

Adventures in Painting

Alternate title: Zoey the Explorer

After reading Rachael's post about how she was going to wallpaper her bathroom, it inspired/guilted me into finishing the painting project I started FIVE months ago. It was that, and I was tired of looking at the random swatches I had painted on the walls (and tired of people saying "Oh, are you going to paint?" when they saw all the swatches painted on the wall :)). In my defense, I did complete five rooms and the hallway when I started the project, but I never quite got around to painting the kitchen and living room (probably the two most difficult rooms in the house). I started looking around at all the things I wanted to do and furniture I wanted to move before having the baby, and I realized that I really needed to finish my painting so that I could get started on all these projects! So...Saturday I began the process/ordeal by taping and moving stuff (only light stuff...I made Eric move the heavy stuff), and things went pretty smoothly. I did encounter a few bumps along the way...mainly from this guy:

He started off the day being very good, but soon realized being good is boring so then he started following me around trying to sniff the paint and rub up against the walls. At one point, I found him pulling some of my painters tape off with his teeth. He also succeeded in knocking over the book shelf full of cds/dvds, breaking it, and putting a large hole in the wall. Needless to say, he is NOT on my good list right now. Shortly after I had cleaned up the mess from the shelf incident, we heard this one (see pic below) meowing her "I'm stuck...now come get me" meow.

Side note: This may make me the biggest crazy cat lady of all time, but I can tell from hearing a meow which cat it is coming from and what they want. I think it just makes me a good kitty momma, but it's probably more of a sign of how loopy I am.

I asked Eric to go look for her and check to see if she was maybe locked in the bathroom...nope. Upstairs in a closet....negative. After a frantic search, I spied an open vent where I had taken the cover off so I wouldn't have to tape around it. I quickly turned to Eric and said "You don't think she crawled into that vent do you?" Before he even answered, I knew that if any cat was inside the vent, it would be Zoey. She's our daredevil wild cat that is always trying to climb on top of doors, squeeze into tight places, or giving me heart attacks (and bites) when she wakes us up in the middle of the night dangling from a closet shelf. Also, she's the only one skinny enough to fit in a vent, which is probably why none of the other cats followed her lead. After several minutes of calling her and shaking a bag of treats near the opening, we began looking around to see how we could get her out. Eric went into the crawl space and started dismantling vents searching for her while I cried and contemplated who I was going to have to call...fire department, police department, animal rescue??? Fortunately, Eric found her in one of the vents and she was fine...it just may have shaved a few years off my life and gave me a few (more) grey hairs!

The rest of the painting went fairly smoothly, except for when we moved all the furniture back and Eric and I argued about whether to put everything back where it was or rearrange it. In the process, we broke the TV and the TV stand, accidentally of course. This resulted in another crying jag from me (stupid pregnancy emotions) and Eric agreeing with me just so that I would stop crying :)! Now that everything is (almost) back to where it should be, I love the new paint and am glad that it is FINISHED! All we have left to do is paint the nursery, but I'm going to give my body and my emotions a few weeks to recover before tackling that project :)!

Here's a sample pic of the color (Sherwin Williams Anjou Pear) we used for the kitchen and living room (they share a wall so we had to paint them the same color). This is not my actual living room...mine is no where near being in a photographable state!

Apple French Toast Casserole

Here's one of the recipes I tried with some of my apples from my orchard trip last week (click on image above for the link but try not to look at the nutrition facts!). I found the link on someone's blog a long time ago, but I can't remember which one so sorry I can't give you the credit. We really enjoyed this recipe, but I think the next time I make it, I will try granny smith apples. I used an assortment of red apples that I had on hand and they were a little too sweet (gala and some others...I forget their names), and I also used low fat butter, egg beaters and skim milk so it wouldn't be quite as fattening. Despite the sweetness, I still added a tiny bit of syrup just to give it more of a french toast taste :)! It was great that it had to set overnight because it was nice to just pop it in the oven the next morning and have a real breakfast before work rather than my usual fiber bar!
I'm actually starting to run out of apples (the baby really likes them) so I'm going back to the orchard this weekend for some more. I think with this batch I'm going to make some yummy apple turnovers and homemade apple sauce...I love this time of year :)!!! I'll share recipes for those later!

Day at the Orchard

One of my favorite things to do in the fall is visit some of our local orchards (and buy some of their yummy apple and pumpkin products, of course)! Last weekend, we drove out to Evans Orchard and enjoyed one of the first sunny days we had seen in quite a while! Our orchards (and maybe others have this too) always have petting zoos and lots of kids stuff, and Eric can never resist the baby goats. Here he is trying to lure one over to pet him/her:

Eric so kindly took this picture of me. I was enjoying a fresh fried apple pie and a cup of apple cider slushie...hey, I'm eating for two...don't judge! (AND yes, I know my sunglasses are ridiculously huge...Eric says they look silly, but I love them!)

While I was enjoying my treat (and I did let Eric have a FEW bites), Eric took this self portrait with my phone. It's not great, but I like the big pile of pumpkins behind him :)!

I wimped out and didn't actually go out in the orchard and pick my own apples because it had rained for a solid week before and was super muddy. Instead, I went to the little orchard store with all the other city slickers and bought my apples from a nice clean cart :)! I also picked up some gourds, butternut squash, and pumpkin butter....YUM! Now, I have a refrigerator full of apples and I just need to decide what to do with them...homemade apple sauce, apple turnovers.....hmm...decisions, decisions...

Dear Panera,

Although I find most of the items on your menu a little over-priced, I do enjoy your food and eat there quite often. One of the reasons I love to eat at Panera is because I feel that you provide healthier options than most restaurants. Usually, my husband and I order water with our meals because we are trying to be more health conscious and want to limit our caffeine and sugar intake. If I am spending $20+ dollars for my lunch (or really, even if I'm just spending $5), I would like a regular size drinking glass for my water. The ones that you make the water-drinkers use are ridiculous. I have seen shot glasses bigger than this! Here is a photo of my "shot glass" of water with your pager up next to it to show just how small it really is!

I demand equal rights for the water drinkers...we deserve regular size cups just like the soda and tea drinkers! It is really quite embarrassing when I have to refill my water glass 10 times or get 3 shot glasses of water at a time! Please fix this.

Smooches-

A.D.
